Last weekend was the 2015 European Open. In March I was named to the Canadian team with my two dogs Feature and Swagger. It should have been an event I was really looking forward to, however, I was heading into it with mixed emotions.
Several times in the past 10 days I had actually written my manager an email bowing out…I didn’t end up sending any of those emails, although I was very tempted.
You see over the past 19 months I have been plagued by a nagging pain in my heel (not plantar fasciitis) that had gotten progressively worse. I had been seeing various specialists and, at first, managing the pain by taping my foot. However, in the past 6 months it had gotten unbearable, even to just walk any distance.
I had virtually stopped running courses at home with my dogs as I couldn’t bare the pain that would follow in the evening. Truthfully I had starting disliking agility because of how badly I felt afterwards. Ten days ago I got an appointment with a top sports specialists at our local University hospital and he shared the same suspicions my podiatrist suggested…a stress fracture that would require 4-6 weeks on crutches. I needed a bone scan to confirm the diagnosis…I baulked at the idea.
Heck I haven’t used a microwave in over ten years, the thought of pumping radioactive juice through my entire body does not excite me. However the pain has won me over. So I agreed and the specialist said I could continue on with my plans of competing at the European Open if I wore these “sexy” running shoes pictured below, along with following some icing and taping protocols.
Those around me and I have affectionately referred to my lovely new runners as the “mattresses.” On the plus side I am about 1.5″ taller for the first time in my life (having never worn heels this is kind of cool). On the downside imagine staging a race with a field of the finest thoroughbreds and putting them up against a Sloth in galoshes (I picked a Sloth as Wikipedia assures me they are the slowest land animal known to man). That is kind of how I felt trying to run agility in these shoes.
So I entered the EO with my new footwear and my brilliant dogs, who I could trust to follow my verbal cues no matter how far back my bum foot and accompanying mattresses held me back.
Honestly I didn’t have huge expectations for the competition. The pain in my heel had allowed me to run only one course at home with my dogs over the past 7 weeks. And then of course I had my stylish footwear to contend with..
But my dogs didn’t let me down. Despite whatever handicap I may have presented for them, both Feature and Swagger made the finals which happened to fall on my birthday on Sunday! Swagger added to that birthday gift by finding that “silver lining” in all of this for me. Yep, he finished on the podium in second at the European Open. Here is Swaggers run from the finals.
You may notice that for the final class I chose to not wear the mattresses. Shhhh please don’t tell the doctor. I wanted to help my dogs as best I could so for that one class I switched back to my old footwear. 🙂
Swagger and I were edged out of first place by my fellow Canadian teammate, friend and Say Yes Summer Camp instructor Jessica Patterson. If we had to be beaten, I couldn’t have hand picked anyone nicer to do it. So proud of both Swagger and also thrilled for all that Jess has accomplished with her young dog “Trix!”
*Edited note. John just reminded me that Feature won a Gold medal at this same venue back in 2010 for her individual standard run at the Agility World Championships… I think I really like Rieden, Germany!!!
Today I am grateful for a phenomenal week in Germany. From the vegan bakery in Frankfurt, to the care from people like Kim, Carol, Diamond, Linda, Dante, Deryl, Brenda, Marleen and of course all of my team mates and the amazing performances from both of my dogs. And today, I am also grateful for the first time to looking forward to some relief from this heel pain…even if it means the rest of the summer on crutches…there has just got to be another silver lining here for me I am just certain…and who knows… maybe the next one will turn out to be gold!
Top notch competitor! Just so Inspiring! Congratulations!
Awesome!! It is so fun watching him grow from Puppy Peaks up through Handling 360 and onto large events. It just goes to show how wonderful your system works for any handler! Way to go!
What a spectacular run – and an amazing bond with your dogs!!! Truly an inspiration!!! Congrats!
Congratulations with the silver medal 🙂
Beautiful run, wonderful team, what dedication and what fun you two had together on that run.
Refreshingly honest and human. Hoping you are on the mend!
Congratulations on all your success! I hope your heel heals quickly ;).
What determination!
What a work ethic she has!
What an inspiration!
These are the words I was saying to myself as I watched your video back. I too have had my share of sports injuries and I understand what it took for you to “push through” that level of pain and continue to compete. But the reward…amazing, hey? It was fun to see Jessica’s run as well and note the different handling choices on that same course while also noting the speed and age gap between you. You and Swagger kept up with that little quick chickadee and Trix.
Congratulations and wishing you speedy “heeling” after your op!
Watching Susan and Swagger is a piece of heaven. You are a brilliant team – two very tuned in beings who inspire many. I see that I am one among many brought to tears. Your generosity in sharing your work/play is much appreciated.
Couldn’t view the video but awesome job well done by you & your wonderful dogs, as ever.
Hope your time on crutches flies by & am sure you will be concocting some new ideas about something or other whilst you are restricted.
Thank you so much for the opportunities you have made possible to so many.
Loving R6, Poppy & I are learning so much together, again many thanks *_* ????????
You mentioned your fancy ‘mattress’ shoes only to say you were taller than me 🙂 and never let on much more than that. Few evolve into athletes as focused and professional, and your ‘ringside’ manner was both of that. Lots of fun, great ideas and fabulous runs! It was honestly an honour to work alongside you, Susan. Congrats to you, Feature and Swagger!
Here is a link to the cutest doggie crutches covers I’ve ever seen. Not sure how trainable they are, but your pits will certainly appreciate them.
Congratulations on your journey. You are an inspiration to all of us.

Wow Susan. I am speechless. You are such an inspiration to me and so many other people. You don’t just give us gems, you are the gem. Congratulations.
Simply awesome! Huge congratulations!
Wow! Lovely, even handicapped you two are just lovely. Congrats…very moving story and video. Amazing coordination/understanding with you and Swagger. Sorry to hear about your heel pain/fracture, hope it resolves itself. Always looking forward to more amazing things from you and your dogs.
Thrilled for you! And thrilled imagining all the no-longer-twenty-somethings who might see this and begin to turn some dreams into goals.
wow! just wow!
HA! Way to go!!!!! So happy you found the problem with your foot. Not knowing is the worst!
Happy birthday and congrats!
Been wearing Hoka’s for 2 years now, I have very bad feet. They are the best made shoes I have found, but still too narrow for my terrible bunions.
Fantastic!! Bravo, Susan!!
Made me cry! Wonderful to watch.
Watching your dogs compete with such beauty and joy moves me to tears! Congratulations.
Susan, as always Amazing, Determined and Brilliant. Your Grit shines through all challenges. Wishing you a safe, speedy and complete solution to your foot pain…. and Blues Sky Days.
Wonderful Swagger & Susan! I hope you are not in too much pain as a result of this extreme effort. Trust all goes well toward a complete recovery so you can strap on the racing shoes again soon.
Goose bumps..tears.. you two ROCK !!
Congratulations, absolutely awesome!
Now get that heel better 🙂
Congratulations, so nice to watch the communication between you and your dogs and see the joy. Weeks pass far to fast and they give time for other stuff and then off running again.
Congratulations on your performance and in maintaining your status….Always amazing!!!!
I have been walking with pain for a year and many therapy sessions and HOKAs have helped immensely! Patty Mah turned me to them during one frustrating agility weekend. I’m still not out of the wood and also battle feelings of quitting…at least for a while until this resolves!!
Felicidades!!!
Watching agility doesn’t normally make me cry
Watching Swagger and Susan does
Perfect choice of song for an awesome run with Swagger. Happy birthday and congratulation.. and thank you for all you share with us.
Amazing run, Here in Argentina there is a frase we say, translated would be, I take off my hat for you, you are amazing Susan!!!

Susan, you are just incredible! Keep showing the youngsters of our sport how it’s done! Thank you for all the inspiration! Have fun on your crutches… you would probably win on these, as well! 🙂
Awesome! What an inspiration!
Wow Susan, belated happy birthday! Full of admiration for your courage, perseverance and the team you’ve created with Swagger. Even “handicapped” you did great to coach him and handling him from a distance. You should be very very proud of yourself and now take care of yourself to heal!
Manny congratulations from Belgium to the Team (Susan&Swagger) for this magnificient performance. This is really a very high standard of handling.
Congratulations Susan. And we’ll done Swagger. What a fantastic team.
Wonderful Swagger and wonderful you! Such an amazing run, brought tears to my eyes(once again)! Congratulations and all the best.
Wow, Susan, you never cease to amaze! What a champ!
Leave it to Swagger to give you the best birthday present you could ask for! Amazing run, powerful song! Congrats coach!!
I love how you show how smart dogs can be!! What a great run!
Congratulations Susan and Swagger! Beautiful run – and I am sure running on sand was not too good for your pain.
Brilliant run!!! What a fantastic Birthday Swagger gave you.Hope your foot gets better quickly.
Hi Susan,
Congratulations on 2nd place! That is a beautiful run 🙂 Like poetry in motion. Love the slo-mo, lets me have a closer look at everything that’s happening.
Sorry to hear about your troubles with your foot. Hopefully they will get to the bottom of it and you will make a full recovery.
And happy belated birthday 🙂
Beauty in motion! It’s brilliant to see in “real time” but thanks for sharing in slo-mo as well. Its wonderful to see all the cues you talk about in H360 in action. Congratulations!
Thank you Susan for sharing your heart about you’re trials and tribulations concerning your heel and having second thoughts about going to the EO. I’m glad they found out what was causing all that pain. Some of us are dealing with similar issues, pain while running etc. So I commend you for not staying home and pressing through the pain, and wearing those “stylish” sneakers.lol Really they’re not that bad.
You inspire us never to give up!
That even in the midst of our adversities, we can find a way to achieve our goals. Maybe, even to see our “silver innings”! Gold too!
Congratulations to you, Swagger and Feature
Congratulations to you and your beautiful partners, Swagger and Feature. Canada rocks!
That was brilliant. I love your dog and your training. Hugs
Awesome run! Loved watching Swagger dig in after the tunnel. Brilliant cuing – loved how he knew which end of the tunnel to take with you so far away. Although it was painful to watch knowing how your foot hurt. Congratulations!!!
As always, Susan – you bring tears to my eyes watching you and your pups run. I would say with that run – I would have been ecstatic just to flow as you and Swagger did, 2nd place or 1st place or last place.
My journey may not have taken me to what I thought it would have been (agility to SAR), but I have learned more from your courses in positive training than I ever have anywhere else.
I pray your heel is mended and you are back to where you want to be in due time. Again, a huge congratulations! I loved seeing you both in slow motion. Love watching each detailed station from start to finish! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Awesome teamwork….amazing dog. I was in tears by the end!
Incredible! Congratulations to a great team!
