Once or twice a month we hold live online coaching sessions for our students. My “Inner Circle” is a group of students I help with their dog training throughout the year so they get one of these sessions each month. Most of my other online classes get one or two of these coaching session over the duration of each course….really it is a tool we use to facilitate learning, clear up challenges, motivate training and get closer to our students.
These coaching sessions usually lasting between 90 -120 minutes. It really depends upon how many questions we get before and during the shoot. We love these sessions and often use our dogs to do demos…but just like “live TV” sometimes the demos don’t go as planned.
This month’s coaching call for my Inner Circle was focused on the “retrieve”. My students assignment was to rate the skill level of their own dogs’ retrieves before we got together (on a scale of 0-10) and we picked the training up from there.
I thought I would share some of the “bloopers” or lighter moments from that session with you…as with most of our coaching sessions, there ends up being a lot of learning with a dash of lunacy…here I share some of those “dashes” from this months session. 🙂
Today I am grateful for Lynda’s sense of humor. As dog owner we all have to find joy somewhere in the midst of even our toughest challenges or it can all get a bit much.
Leave me a comment and me know which part got to you the most…it will give me insight into your sense of humour 🙂
If this is part of IC I would like to be a member. I only have two questions:
1) How should we practice the human maneuvers/mechanics you show on this wonderful video and
2) will we get a pdf with the verbal cues you use as a bonus (just like we got with Jump, Alalala, Sprinkler etc 🙂
Mugge thats funny!
THAT’S MY DOG!!!!!!!
You two are so funny! You set each other off and it’s fun to watch. It is good to be reminded that there is a funny side to training. I love your comment about the “glove on steroids” and your playfull ” badgering” of Linda while she was trying to read off her laptop. I watched this morning. A great start to the day!
ARR- it is National Pirate’s day!
I thought it was Lynda that was tired and punchy!
Lynda your puppy is a scream! Very entertaining….!!!
Hi Susan, I can`t believe that you are such a funny one, I always thought you are a very serios person :), the best part of the video is the playing poodlepuppy without looking at you, its not your puppy 🙂
Loved watching the pair of you working together – making sure the “joy” was there. And the bit about “not my puppy” and then finishing touch of “can’t think of anything for Dare!”
Only just managed to watch the coaching call yesterday and laughed out loud at the ‘not my puppy’ – great to be reminded of the Peter Sellers ‘does your dog bite’ too. Brilliant coaching call. Thought my retrieves were fairly good until I broke them down went from thinking a 9 (!) to reality of nearer a 6! Loads of work needed and now have the tools to do it thanks Susan and LOH
Ok, so Susan, what got you wound up?????? Coupla crazeee ladies! Lucy and Ethel at it again! Was bummed I missed that call live, been trying to find a time to watch it. Will definitely make it a priority!!! Great clips! Phil, very good job! Thanks! Fun!
Loved puppy poodle – very funny. Also enjoyed the “behind the scenes” insight, so helpful in learning how to deal with challenges and just get on with having fun.
My fav was definitely this is your glove on drugs. So unexpected. 2nd fav would have to be at the end… “I can’t think of anything with your dog”. The delivery was perfect. Lol
Loved it……the best vidieo yet
Coaching Calls are a highlight for me each month. They remind me to carry joy into my day to day life as well as my dog training 🙂
Made my day 🙂 also i was trying the pirate talk as well without noticing 🙂
What are you guys on. I want some.
Haha, Susan… you need to stop with those drugs 😀 😀
Hilarious, its my morning here in Australia and this has started my day with a good chuckle!
Love it!! Even funnier with the effects. Susan, did Lynda know this was going on International TV???? LOLOL
Yes Sharon, I ran it by her first. 🙂 she is a good sport and I reminded her of this clip to refresh her memory that the best ones start off the naughtiest 😉
http://youtu.be/3reGQdnvo90?list=UU9M357-HY4YJ06U_AHMb_hw
Oh, I so love that clip too! 🙂
Well that’s too funny – I clicked the link to watch the video, and the ad that came up before I could watch it was “Showing your Pirate Side” from Disney World! LOL!
That is hysterical Laura!
Tears in my eyes laughing at all of it !! 🙂
Thanks for the bloopers, esp to Linda for being such a good sport about Dare. I really enjoy the humorous moments on coaching calls esp because they help me stay awake during the wee morning hours watching the calls.
My favorite moments were definitely ” not my dog”,
” some of us have holes to work on” (Sorry Linda)
” glove on drugs” I remember the commercial:)
Its always fun to watch great friends enjoying what they are doing and each other.
That was just plain funny. Love the CC’s & love how real you are with them. As Popeye would say, “I yam what I yam!”
Just watched the recording this weekend and must say Phil did a brilliant job with the blooper video 🙂
… they run as fast if you throw a spoon, a frisbee, a live cat (gasp my cats digress) or a chainsaw … I would love to see the live cat retrieve. If one can do it then it’s Susan 🙂
Pirate talk!! Definitely pirate talk.
we have a joke…
always be yourself.
If you can’t be yourself then be a pirate.
works every time 🙂
Love the bit of Feature’s head shaking the toy and barking! And the ‘not my dog’….but sweet Dare aka eggs & bacon boy, really steals the show…again!
Twister does what we have titled the “Celebratory Romp”! Every so often she seems so proud of doing a good job that when rewarded with the toy she will race back to me, shake the toy then run in a small circle back to me and put it in my hand…haha! ….just for a special occasions I guess.. 😉 !
Arrrr! I loves the Punch & Judy pirate theme and the ” fixing the hole” part where Lynda is trying to keep a straight face (I wonder what she was thinking about?). My all time favourite is from Recallers 5 coaching call number 2 where Susan appears to have become high from eating too many Belguim chocolates.
The little kitten with the mournful meow – hahaha!
Feature’s enthusiastic response to “Let’s hear it for Denise!” hahahaha
It’s very refreshing that you are enjoying what you do and also have so much fun doing it. I also like that you are serious about competing but make light of the silly antics of your dogs when training. I am learning to lighten up and laugh when things don’t go according to plan. As for your bloopers, my favorite is the talk like a pirate ARRRRGH, which is a joke between my sister and me. It made my day. I like that very wacky sense of humor in a person.
I have to be honest, I love the paper towel roll prop. I’m sure Lynda could have done without it and I’m sorry I took pleasure in it Lynda but it made me lol. Best friends are awesome!
Don’t know Frank, but he sure did a great job. LOL, wonder why retrieve would be important, sure Dare is wondering that as well. She had a blast on her own. Love you guys, made me smille, thanks!
I came away laughing from this hilarious call, all because of Lynda (“I’m traumatized!”) who was SO-O-O-O mortified ( at Susan’s pointing finger : “Not MY puppy!”)
Priceless!
Congratulations, Lynda, who blushed and even managed to not quite cry! with such good grace at the end!
Why? because Susan’s goofiness (“You know what? It’s playful!” she says after socking Lynda in the arm!) is a reminder that we are here to train but also we can laugh at mistakes and decide how to fix them.
The whole interaction was a gem.
Beyond a doubt what I LOVE most of all is Susan putting training insight into verbal dialogue with the dog. Susan saying: “You know what? we are so-o-o not doing that” or Swagger saying: ” I am so-o-o going to go in that car!”
Lynda and Susan are both very skillful at this. it’s a fabulous teaching aid.
The kitten with its mournful meow – hahahaha! And Feature applauding when you say “let’s hear it for Denise!” – hahahahaha!
Loved it all, when I watched the whole call and watching these highlights. Favourite bit for spontaneity and fun was “glove on drugs” But overall, the warmth and respect that shine through the fun and also through the pain. Heart warming.
Beautiful Penny!
Loved it – I hate being on calls or watching videos that are boring. I learn/retain a lot more when I’m having fun. Watching/listening to these calls is just good old fashioned fun and the best learning tool ever. Please don’t change a thing.
Now I have seen where a ‘retrieving’ poodle leads too. After 3 and half years mine is now retrieving, thanks to Linda’s tug instructions. Can’t stop laughing….. please show us more!!!!
Fantastic…I want what you all were having! Humor is an integral part of teaching or should be. It has to be fun for humans and canines. Lots of favorite parts, but I never can resist the antics of a puppy relishing a toy. Thanks for sharing…again! Cheers…
FUN Always fun to see the teachers doing goofy fun stuff. Loved “not my dog”.
Remember Peter Sellers movie; man to Sellers: ” Does your dog bite?”
PS: “no” (dog bites man)
Man: “You said your dog does not bite.”
PS: “That’s not my dog!”
Frank that was awesome. I remember that, Peter Sellers was amazing.
Frank, Good One! One of my favorite Peter Sellers skits from the Pink Panther movies 🙂
OH MY! That was funny and well put together! Way to go! Phil and Starsky (either you have too much time on your hands or Lucy and Ethel are driving you across the plank – arr arr!)
Love the IC Peeps coaching calls!
Ethel, maybe Lucy needs a cost response for her distracting poking moments! LOL!
Love what you did to the coaching call! Very funny!
That just made my day! Loved the “Not my puppy!” Thank you for sharing this, it’s was wonderful!
Just the fact that you could interrupt the retrieve for sit/stand/pretty/down was amazing!! Love the fact that the puppy did the exact thing that my dogs used to do: run off with the toy and make their own game! They still don’t out on command very well. 🙂 I really enjoyed the silliness between the two of you…especially the part where you were clearly abusing Lynda with what appeared to be a cardboard dowel. A good reminder for me to keep things light-hearted and fun, no matter the circumstances.
Oh, and I did sit here and try making that ARRGH sound. LOL
So important to laugh while training. I just loved that you two had so much fun. My TFT taught me that and I realize that I have to get back to more of it with my RT. He’s a very serious boy, but loves when I laugh and smile. Thanks for reminding me that it’s the journey that counts.
How to pick just one? The clapping “grover” or was it “rover”…the perfect example of a puppy returning tug to hand…beating with what looks like a paper towel tube. But favorite…’you just have to say different #$%!’. That I can understand!
“will have to send out a search team to retrieve the dog” I am a recoilers and puppy peak student and have watched every since video submission for 360. A little jealous I was unable to play in that one…. but am dying to know the lalalala banana stuff… LOL Keep up the great work… you give us all a little hope!!
Clearly, non IC Peeps are missing out! Ethel and Lucy at the height of well coordinated goofiness. Lucky Phil, to have the task of adding special effects….chicken clucking my favorite.
Karla Phil LOVES this part of his job. 🙂
I giggled thru the Coaching call & again here. Loved all the pieces. My favorite was watching the pure joy Dare was having with the rope. Personality PLUS!! Gotta love a thinking dog!!
I agree Dian….you gotta love that Pup, playing with total abandonment…would love to see his sister Synge get together for a romp…Suzanne “ya done good with that breeding”
Great movie. I had to laugh a lot of times but the most at “that’s not my puppy”. Lol. My dog does the same as Dare, she goes partytiming with her toy amd won’t bring it back (although we are making progress in training this). My mom (who is also my trainer and IC peeps) always says the same “that is not my dog, if I would have trained her she wouldn’t he doing that”. Hahaha.
When my mom saw this coaching call she told me that Dare did the same as Aviendha and Susan made the same comment as mom does, lol. We had a great laugh about it.
@ 😉 Femke. I don,t like party timing with a toy but we did laugh about it…
omg seriously laughed out loud which is unusual when your alone. Loved the playfulness between you both, loved when you both got the giggles. You both are AWSOME.
Sounds like it was a very productive call! So why is a retrieve so important?
The monthly calls are definitely fun, even if some of us can’t always be there to watch them live.
Favourite part: definitely the added sound and visual effects!!! Was that Phil’s handiwork?
Yes Laura, Phil’s handiwork indeed 🙂
love the bloopers, I am sure your students learn, loads, these periods, will act as a natural break, activating different parts of their brain. I am sure they will remember tons of info, and be highly motivated, and allow themseves forgiveness when things don’t go according to plan. Brilliant from Nicki
