Lessons in Gratitude

Posted on Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Things I find myself thinking about at 5:30 in the morning while I wait for the rain to stop. If you find yourself lamenting about something a friend “did” to you remember to be grateful you have that friend and the lessons you may be learning from them. To those that complain about their “talentless students”, remember to be grateful you have students and the talents you possess that made you an attractive teaching option in the first place.

I end each blog post about gratitude not as a way to preach to to all of you but rather of a daily reminder to myself of all I have been blessed with.

A couple of great quotes for you this weekend.

I love this picture of my friend's 2 year old, being grateful for his playhouse on wheels (an RV they rented here in Florida).

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…. It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow. ~Melodie Beattie

“When we choose not to focus on what is missing from our lives but are grateful for the abundance that’s present….we experience heaven on earth.” Sarah Breathnach

“Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass…it’s about learning to dance in the rain!” -Vivian Greene

At times when our own light goes out, it is rekindled by a spark from another person.  Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us. Albert Schweitzer

Today I am grateful to all of those that rekindle my light; my husband, my friends, my family, my students, my dogs.

Have a great one everyone.

Thanks for all your timely reminders that helps to keep our lives in perspective.
Today we are almost knee deep in snow, I am thankful for two young teens who are shoveling out my driveway (for a fee of course)

    Thanks again Susan.

Thanks. It is always good to think about what we are grateful for.Our beautiful little girl that we rescued in October, that was terrified of her own shadow and every person or dog she met, has made leaps and bounds in her confidence. Today we took a big step forward, and that I am very grateful for.

And today, Susan, I am grateful for your Blog. Yes, it does give good ideas & advice about Agility. . . but what’s bigger than that is the “gift” of being Human. . . .and I am reminded of that time and again when reading your Blog. . . . with a heartfelt Thanks!

Thanks for the reminder Susan. It was just a couple of hours ago that I came home from teaching a puppy class and complained to my boyfriend about a student of mine that is really testing my patience. She was also my very first student 2-1/2 years ago and comes to all of my classes and workshops and is really a terrific person.

No more complaints from me. I’ll just use it as experience and continue to develop my patience.

For those of us who are or have been professors, teachers, instructors, or coaches: your students are a reflection of your gifts as a teacher. What you teach and your passion for it should inspire students and help them work through the challenges. We are truly blessed that prople want to learn from us.

    Susan-

Thank your for your ongoing inspiration! Today you inspired me to share my experience at a recent trial with my patients. (I stole you title for my bog post!!) Gratitude is something we can all stand to have a little more of.
